Published figures show that 86% of adults in Buckinghamshire drink alcohol, and while most report drinking within the NHS guidelines there are over 100,000 adults in the county whose alcohol consumption could be harmful: Not only to their physical health but also to their mental well being. This means that alcohol is the leading cause of disability , and death, in working age adults in the county. 

 

Over the last ten years, the drug death rate in Buckinghamshire has risen by 48% though this started to fall in 2021.  For the financial year 2019-2020, there were 759 new clients seeking help from statutory services, within the county, for drug and alcohol dependence.  Twenty percent (153) were adults who had children living with them.

Hospital admissions for drug related intoxication stood at 157 for the year 2020-2021. This is a rate of 28.7% per 100,000. While there is no clear trend in a five year period figures show that the rate is lower than the average for England.

During the 2020-2021 financial year period, there were 23 deaths that were attributed, by the coroner, as being due to drug poisoning. This was an improvement on the previous year (34) . However, each one is a tragedy, not only for the individual, but also for their family, friends and the community.

Statutory services are provided, through a commissioned service, by One Recovery Bucks , which is part of Midland Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.

For fee paying clients, residential treatment is

available in the country. There are both low cost and luxury 

centres available.  Private outpatient servces are

available as are sessions with drug and alcohol focused
