Coventry

Coventry has a population of around 360,000 with an average age of around 33. It is mainly due to the large student population that the this is lower than the UK average.  It is encouraging that, when the last set of figures were released, a trend has emerged of lower than average numbers, pro rata, of abstinence from alcohol among the adult population in the County. Subsequently, there has also been a reduction in the number of alcohol related deaths in Coventry. However, conversely, admissions to hospital for alcohol related conditions is significantly higher than the national average, though not wholly out of line with other comparable areas of deprivation. This being said, there has been a year on year reduction over the three year period prior to the statistics being published.

While there are, approximately, 14,000 people in Coventry who are high risk drinkers, only 6% access statutory services for help. The figures for opioid and crack use are more encouraging at 46% but are still under the 52% national average. While drug use, across the city, is falling there are some concerns over increasing reliance on alcohol by older people in the city.
