There are an estimated 40,000 adults within the Portsmouth area who consume alcohol above the NHS advisable limits. It is estimated that 7,000 of these are dependent drinkers.  Every year, there are in excess of 4,000 residents in Portsmouth who have to be admitted to hospital due to alcohol use. Up to half of all violent crime in the area is attributed to alcohol, and this includes incidents of domestic violence.

When compared to others areas in South East England, Portsmouth has the second highest rate of drug related deaths at 10.2 per 100,000. When compared to the average for England (4.7) it is clear that there are significant issues to be addressed. Indeed, for the South East, the average rate is only 3.9 per 100,000.

 

Published figures for the financial year 2019-2020 (adults between 18-99) show that 597 adults presented, for the first time, to local statutory drug and alcohol services. The use of drugs within Portsmouth is widespread with approximately 12,000 adults using illicit drugs on an annual basis.
