Statistics on drug and alcohol dependency in Wakefield suggest that there are 2,927 adults, over the age of 18, using either heroin, crack, or both, in Wakefield (2020). From this figure, 1,658 were dependent on opioids only, and 382 were dependent on crack without any opioid use. The number of adults dependent only on opioids, per 1,000 adults, was (for this period) significantly higher than the average for England.

In 2022 there were 1,565 adults receiving treatment for opioid use in the city with a further 275 receiving treatment for other drugs and 150 for non-opioid drugs and alcohol. This means that the district of Wakefield now has the highest rates of drug deaths in the Yorkshire/Humber region with 105 between 2019-2021. 1,097 adults were arrested for drug offenses in 2022.

More men, than women, were in treatment in 2022. For example, 440 women were in treatment for drug dependency as opposed to 1,097 men.  Those using opioids tend to be older than those using other types of drugs in Wakefield. Only 5% of those in treatment for opioids were under 30 whereas 51% of those in treatment for non-opioid use were under thirty.
