The local paper in Wolverhampton reported on the 13th of January 2023 that there had been an alarming rise in the number of alcohol-related deaths in Wolverhampton. During 2020 the city experienced the worst rate of alcohol-related deaths in the whole of England with 23.9 per 100,000 adults over the age of 18. This equates to 70 deaths.  Fortunately, there was a downturn in 2021 with 54. These are higher than the average for the West Midlands at 42.9 per 100,000 and the average for England at 37.8. Wolverhampton Council estimates that 82% of those struggling with alcohol dependency, in the city, are not seeking help.

For those seeking and engaging in treatment, the recovery outcomes are positive with nearly 45% completing courses of treatment. Indeed, since 2015, completion rates in Wolverhampton have been consistently higher than the average for England. Wolverhampton is, currently, in the top quarter of performers for successful completion of alcohol treatment in the UK.

With regard to drugs, the number of deaths has halved: year on year.  In 2020 there were 26, and yet in 2021, this had fallen to 12.
